The Peterhead Project

The North East of Scotland has proved to be a valuable constituent of Andy's portfolio: Peterhead, Aberdeen, Stonehaven, and Ellon have all commissioned sculptures from Andy for their townscape developments.

In Peterhead the redevelopment of the streetscape included a series of canopies at the entrance to each of the pends or closes which run along the main street. These are accompanied by matching bronze inlays in the granite slabs set in the pavement. These elements are inspired by various aspects of historical relevence to the town of Peterhead: The Jacobite rebellion of 1745, a 1930's local dance hall, the army regiment of the region and other subjects are rendered in profile-cut steel and cast bronze.

The project is further enhanced by a bronze sculpture which is sited at the head of the main pedestrian precinct. This female figure represents a "fishwife" and clebrates the historical role of women in the society of the town formerly dominated by the fishing industry. She is accompanied by a child figure representing further generations and the future of the town.

The Peterhead project involved a considerable degree of eductional outreach, carried out by Wilma Eaton, which involved visual art, dance, photography and drama and resulted in a series of wall mounted panels along the pend walls in the town centre.
