The Kirkcaldy Mural

Kirkcaldy, Fife

This wall-mounted panel is sited on the gable end of recently renovated housing in Kirkcaldy, Fife, on the East coast of Scotland. It was commissioned by Kingdom Housing Association and is the third artwork to be purchased by the organisation, the others being in the towns of Cupar and Methil. This particular panel depicts features and details relevant to the history of Kirkcaldy: the architecture of Robert Adam, the Links Market, the linoleum industry and the inventor of global time zones amongst others.

The sculpture is made of galvanized steel bar and in essence is a steel line drawing on a grand scale. It creates a striking mural without the complications of maintenance associated with traditional gable wall mural paintings.

Another of this type of panel was commissioned by West of Scotland Housing Association for their premises in Springburn, north Glasgow, and this artwork depicts features relevant to the history of heavy engineering and locomotive manufacturing which once dominated the area.
